EXPERT EXPERIENCE: Planning appeals- inquiries, hearings and written representations for public, private and voluntary sector clients, High Court, House of Commons Select Committee on Urban Affairs, historic buildings, conservation areas, conservation plans, policy and strategy, urban design, related reports and appraisals.

Trained in art, architecture, planning and conservation, Jack s career, spanning over thirty years, has focused on shaping historic environments.  After creating and leading Conservation and Urban Design at Wandsworth Council in London, he founded CAP in 1991.  Jack's persona, leadership and ability to meet challenges, from repair of ancient buildings to creating a vision for historic places in the 21st century bring immeasurable added value to both CAP s practical and consultancy projects.        

Jack s earliest work in building conservation won him a European Architectural Heritage Year Award, a television spot and a special study visit by the SPAB. Experience includes numerous building conservation and contextual new build projects, Town Centre Plans, numerous enhancement schemes, including the award-winning Battersea Square, the Thames Riverside Urban Design Guide, a Shopfront Design Guide, listed building rescue and repair, London s first Buildings at Risk survey and register and Do it in Style the acclaimed householder repair guide launched by the then Environment Secretary and a precursor to the IHBC/SPAB guide A Stitch in Time.

Jack has led and co-authored several nationally authoritative conservation manuals, as well as various Action and Conservation Plans, pedestrian and traffic calming measures. He is responsible for over several hundred historic building, historic area and townscape appraisals including World Heritage sites. His work embraces both urban and rural areas. Jack has always advocated and practiced a unified approach to conservation and urban design in historic areas

Executive member of the Urban Design Group. Member of the Education and Technical Committees of the IHBC, IHBC delegate to the Urban Design Alliance (UDAL) Executive and Board of Architects Accredited in Building Conservation (AABC). Former member of British Standards sub-committee which drafted BS7913: Guide to the Principles of the Conservation of Historic Buildings . Works in professional and popular media. Member of the Irish Heritage Council s Planning and Architects panels. External Examiner to the Historic Conservation post-graduate programme at Oxford Brookes University, 2001-5. Conservation evidence (2004) for the RTPI to House of Commons Select Committee on Urban Affairs. Recent or current work includes listed buildings, call-in inquiries, studies of Historic Towns, MoD guidance.
